Tax, COP28, potholes and airlift to feature in the House
Spirited debate is likely during today’s sitting of the House of Assembly as the milestone Corporate Income Tax Act 2023 is on the agenda.
The Bill has been described by David Burt, the Premier, as “an opportunity for Bermuda to chart a path towards meaningful tax reform”.
The opposition One Bermuda Alliance has proposed an amendment to the bill to ensure that revenues generated from the 15 per cent tax on corporate revenues will be directed towards debt repayment and infrastructure.
The Government has described that amendment as “disappointing and perplexing”, and has urged the OBA to withdraw it.
In a strongly-worded statement last night, a government spokeswoman declared that the OBA was potentially jeopardising “countless hours of work that the International Tax Working Group and the Ministry of Finance have expended to get this right”.
Legislators will also discuss two tourism investment orders — for the Ariel Sands in Devonshire and the Bermudiana Beach Resort in Warwick — along with a number of other bills, including the Bermuda Monetary Authority Amendment Act 2023 and the Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited Act.
Ministers will be on their feet delivering a series of updates on Government activity since the last session.
David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, will deliver his pre-Budget report and midyear financial update, while Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier, will provide the public with an update on the results of his trip to the COP28 conference in the United Arab Emirates.
Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, will provide an update on the current pothole situation, while Transport Minister Wayne Furbert will offer details about his recent trip to the US, made in a bid to secure more airlift to the island.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, will report on her attendance of the 46th Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development on Gender.
