A Bermudian medical student is thriving at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama.

Jadyn Teart, a senior at the school, highlighted the cultural diversity of the campus in a video released by the US Consulate General in Hamilton.

The video is part of the consulate’s Study with “US” campaign, which spotlights Bermudians who are enrolled in, or graduated from, universities in the United States.

Ms Teart, who graduated from the Bermuda Institute in 2020, received a $40,000 scholarship from Oakwood, the $10,000 Honourable Eugene H. Cox Scholarship and bursaries from the Department of Workforce Development.

She told young Bermudians: “Apply to every single scholarship you can, even if it’s not in your major and just a general scholarship. You never know what opportunity you will be able to get.”

Ms Teart, a dual citizen of Bermuda and the US, is the social media adviser for Oakwood’s surgical interest association and is part of the school’s African student association, social vice team, minority association of pre-medical students and reach and outreach club.

She received several awards from the school, has been on the honour roll and dean’s list, and was accepted into the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heersink School of Medicine during her junior year.

Ms Teart said the early acceptance “relieved the stress of having to apply to medical school after completing my bachelor’s degree.”

Karen Grissette, the US Consul-General, said Ms Teart “represents a unique population of dual citizens in Bermuda who are eligible for additional opportunities which are simple to access by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

“I commend Jadyn for successfully obtaining scholarships available in Bermuda and the United States, and for already securing a place in medical school in the United States.”

More than 80 Bermudian students study at Oakwood University, which is the only historically Black college or university owned and operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
