Elliot Primary treated to free breakfast
Youngsters at a primary school were treated to a free breakfast as part of a campaign to fight hunger in Bermuda.
The volunteer group Bermuda Is Love set up a breakfast stand at Elliot Primary School, offering pancakes, eggs, sausages and fruit to pupils of all grades.
The pupils, according to organisers and teachers, were thrilled to have the breakfast just before the school day started.
One teacher, Anthony Crichlow, said: “It was good to see the students eating and socialising in mixed age groups at their tables.
“It reminded me of something you might see at family gatherings.”
The breakfast, which took place in the school’s assembly hall earlier this month, was catered by La Trattoria and Butterfield & Vallis.
Aaron Crichlow, the cofounder of Bermuda Is Love, said that the breakfast drive was part of the group’s #ZeroHunger campaign for the month of December.
He said that breakfast was important in helping children learn throughout the day.
He added that it was the group’s firm belief that “no child should ever go hungry”.
Mr Crichlow said: “Research shows that nutritious meals are fundamental to a child’s physical and cognitive development, including improved academic performance, increased concentration, better attendance and enhanced overall health.
“Ensuring that all children have access to nutritious food is not only an investment in their future and their overall health and wellbeing, but it is also our commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality that affects families across the island.”
George Barbieri, also from Bermuda Is Love, thanked La Trattoria and Butterfield & Vallis for their help.
He said: “Both La Trattoria and Butterfield & Vallis were immediately open to being engaged in the project and we honestly could not have done it without their generosity.
“Catering free food to children was a beautiful project to be a part of and we look forward to making this a sustainable reality for them.”
