Utility lines down in Paget
Commuters heading into Hamilton from the West End are facing traffic diversions after utility lines came crashing down on Harbour Road in Paget yesterday morning.
The incident took place near the junction with Valley Road at about 8.45am.
One motorist described how cables and a box “dropped from the sky” on to the busy road, causing sparks to fly across her path.
The commuter said: “It was frightening. I was lucky because as I turned the corner I saw some sparks in the middle of the road.
“Then, all of a sudden, cables came down along with some sort of power box. The pole is still erect, but sparks from the cables went everywhere.”
The quick-thinking commuter was able to pull over and call the police before continuing her journey.
Emergency services at the scene diverted traffic on to Middle Road via Chapel Road.
A statement on the Bermuda Police Service’s X account said: “Good morning all, there is a downed power line on Harbour Road in the area of Valley Road, Paget. Traffic diversions are in place at Chapel Road, Valley Road, and Highwood Lane.
“Please be advised that this outage has caused a disruption to traffic on Harbour Road. We ask all road users to take an alternate route via Middle Road.
“If you do find yourself in the area, please exercise caution when driving or riding past our working crews as the safety of you and our team is of the utmost importance. We thank you for your patience as we work to restore your power.”
