Success Academy students volunteer at Southlands garden
Young people are developing a sense of community while they help the environment in a gardening scheme.
A government statement said students from Success Academy have volunteered with the Mirrors Programme’s Field of Learning garden at Southlands Park, and will do so weekly as part of a tailored curriculum designed for them.
Success Academy takes an alternative, therapeutic approach to education for boys of middle school and high school age.
Kimberley Jackson, a senior programme director at Mirrors, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Success Academy into the Mirrors Field of Learning Garden family.
“Their enthusiastic involvement has been nothing short of inspiring, and their commitment to hands-on learning and community involvement embodies the spirit of growth and education that the Mirrors Programme aims to cultivate.”
Nelson Bascome III, Mirrors’ garden lead, added: “The dedication displayed by Success Academy students in our garden has been remarkable.
“Their presence and participation not only contribute to the enhancement of our garden but fosters a community of learning, active participation and environmental sustainability.
“For their invaluable time and contribution in the garden, Success Academy’s students earn co-curricular hours.
“The Mirrors Programme looks forward to further developing this partnership by tailoring a specialised curriculum that aligns with Success Academy's educational goals while providing a unique opportunity for hands-on learning and personal development."
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Developed and Seniors, called the partnership a “testament to the power of education and community engagement”.
She said: “It is heartening to see our youth actively involved in initiatives that foster learning, responsibility, and a strong sense of community.”
