Bermudian singer joins Bristol band on European tour
A Bermudian singer living in England will join a popular deejay and his music group on their tour across Europe.
Dakari Love will accompany the Mista Trick Collective as the lead male vocalist as they perform across Britain and part of continental Europe.
Love, whose real name is Nkosi Hollis, said: “I’m just excited to be going along with other musicians.
“I haven’t had a chance to do rehearsals like this in a long time.”
Love, who attends the British Institute of Modern Music in Bristol, said he had been told by a professor that the group was looking for a male vocalist.
He said that his professor urged him to join the collective on their tour, and later contacted the collective’s leader, Mista Trick, to put in a good word.
Love said: “When I found out I’d been invited to tour with them, I was ecstatic.
“I’ve been focused on my studies, and I haven’t been performing as much as I used to, so it feels great to be able to get back into performing.
“We’ve had a nice long conversation, and I think the chemistry is there.”
Mista Trick is a deejay and music producer who cut his teeth in Bristol’s music and club scenes.
Boasting more than 64,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, he is known for blending genres such as jazz, swing and soul music with drum-and-bass beats.
His most recent string of EPs have included remixed versions of songs from Bing Crosby to Lily Allen.
Love said that he appreciated Mista Trick’s ability to pull off unconventional genre mixes and intended to employ a similarly wide range of styles into his own music.
He added that the opportunity to perform with the collective would promote him as a musician and could give him a boost in the Bristol scene, which he said he had been trying to break into since he moved.
Love said: “When it comes to the music industry, it’s not about what you know but who you know, so I think this can give me a helpful boost.”
Love said that the tour will involve eight shows across Britain, and will take him to London, Manchester, Liverpool and Reading.
He added that while the locations for venues in Europe were still being set, he knew they would be likely to perform in Paris.
Love said that rehearsals start on Thursday and that their first show was on February 3.
He added that he looked forward to growing as a musician with the help of a larger group.
He said: “When I was in Bermuda, I did pretty much everything by myself — promotions, songwriting, everything.
“Now I think it’s a different journey, doing this with a community.
“It’s really eye-opening to see what I can do.”
Dakari Love has promised to release a new musical project this year, the first in three years.
Concrete Garden, an upcoming EP, will reflect the personal and professional growth he has experienced over the past few years, according to the artist.
Love said: “I’ve been going through a lot of growth and a lot of evolving, and that’s what this project represents.
“There’s been a lot of lessons learnt for me and a lot of growth.
“I’m excited to show where I’ve been for the last few years.”
He told The Royal Gazette that he conceived of the project during his time at the British Institute of Modern Music, and created it over the course of a year with the help of producer George Vessey.
He added that it will touch on topics such as rediscovering his passions and his newfound approach to life.
Love said that the project it likely to be released in the spring.
