Netball teams clash in Fast5 and Merle Parfitt tournaments

Defending champions: Lindo's Tigers are the team to beat in the Fast5 tournament (Photograph supplied)

Netball action restarts after going on a break for the festive season with two tournaments lined up at Bernard Park today.

Starting at noon is the Merle Parfitt Hustle tournament for the under-11, under-14 and under-17. After that, the seniors take centre stage in the Fast5 tournament, which gets under way at 5.30pm.

Matches in both tournaments will be played over two five-minute halves. Winners of the round-robin matches, with whoever is on top of the table at the end being declared the winner.

Lindo’s Tigers, who are yet to lose a match in the Netball League, are the defending champions.

Anthony Mouchette, the Tigers coach, declared his team’s intentions of retaining the silverware they won a year ago. Mouchette is looking to the Trott twins, Jahkenya and Jahtuere, to deliver in this format of the game, which has shortened matches and goals worth multiple points, depending on where they are shot from.

“We plan on defending this trophy,’’ Mouchette said. “We have trained hard in preparing for this and will implement a few strategies.

“The twins are best known for their long-range shooting, so this suits us. We just need to execute on the day. We should do well as most of our key players are available.”
