Police Rugby Club teams won both matches in the 49th edition of the Duckett Memorial at Police Field on Saturday.

The men’s side subdued the Bermuda Rugby Football Board President’s XV 20-19 in a hard-fought encounter, while the women won 15-5 over “the Rest”.

Darren Richardson, the men’s captain, who had predicted a tough encounter in a fixture his side have dominated over the years, saluted all those involved for showing rugby was still full of life on the island.

“Hats off to everybody and it’s a day like today [ Saturday ] where Bermuda rugby really comes together and shows that people can do what it takes to keep the game alive,’’ Richardson said.

“It’s a massive thanks to everybody that came down to be a part of the day. The officials, the supporters, the opposition, it takes a great effort to pull this game off so Bermuda rugby should be proud.

“I'm a winning captain and I'm proud of my team. We did what we had to do and there’s nothing better than grinding out a win in the last five minutes of a hard-fought game.

“Hopefully, we kick on from here to finish the season on a high note. We’re looking forward to the next couple of weeks and seeing what we can do.”

Meagan Stecko, the women’s captain, was pleased with the outcome of her team’s match.

“It was a great game,’’ she said. “We really wanted to get out and play against the Rest team. We came out technically strong, we played really well and I’m really happy with how it happened and now ready for the rest of the season to commence.

“We’re happy to retain the trophy, we've done so over the past three years. Hopefully, we keep doing so.”
