A food chain’s West End location was burgled this morning, the owner of the franchise said today.

According to Marico Thomas, the Somerset location of his FoodHub chain was targeted by three individuals with “crowbars and tools”.

Mr Thomas, whose Foodhub restaurant in Paget was robbed last month, took to social media to share his frustration.

He wrote: “It probably goes without saying that we do not appreciate the cost of damage repair, and it is not a matter of insurance cover.

“Beyond the cost is the aggravation and the distraction. Beyond the distraction is the negative social and consumer impact.

“We should not get to the point of having to place bars on doors and windows.

“In colonial-themed St George’s, this would be charming. Across Bermuda this is not.”

Mr Thomas said that none of his staff were present during the incident, which took place this morning.

He added that despite the absence of employees on site at the time, “this situation is disturbing”.

“Robbery at any time by anyone is unpleasant,” he said.

“To have three persons, all in dark clothing, with heavy tools visit you at 4am could be terrifying.”

Mr Thomas said that the three suspects broke into the eatery and searched for valuables before making their escape on “multiple vehicles”.

He did not say whether they made off with anything valuable, but emphasised that his FoodHub locations do not hold money as per store policy.

He also commended the police on their quick response, though they “narrowly missed” the intruders.

Mr Thomas said that while he was aware that the post-Christmas season and an increase in drug seizures had made many strapped for cash, he was still baffled by the constant raids against his franchise.

He said: “Unemployment numbers are reported to be down, and down substantially.

“I am aware of employers who say they cannot find people to work — even in unskilled jobs.”

Mr Thomas added: “What else are we hearing? Speculation ranges from inside jobs to targeted attacks.

“Regardless, or perhaps despite this, our primary focus will remain to be safety, security, comfort and style.”

Mr Thomas said that while he was against the installation of security bars at his FoodHub sites, he is not sure how to maintain the charm aesthetic along with security for his buildings.

He said: “How should one go about preserving the island's charm while ensuring safety?

“I am against bars — I am for tourism, economic growth and prosperity for individuals and companies.

“However, the recent incidents underscore the need for a heightened approach to security, hopefully without compromising the unique character of Bermuda.

“And it would be great for that to occur before exceeding the limit to a person’s good nature.”

Police confirmed that they were aware of the burglary and that it was under investigation.
