Some people attract more mosquitoes than others

To court: A sealed evidence bag with a vial of mosquito larvae or eggs is used as proof in court proceedings against people who refuse to clean up their property.

1) A new adult must rest on the water surface for a short time to dry all its parts and to harden before it can fly. This requires still water and is one reason mosquitoes don’t grow in fountains or fast moving water.

2) Mosquitoes do breed in the winter in Bermuda. All mosquitoes are temperature sensitive and breed best under conditions specific to their species. Summer temperatures in Bermuda are more conducive to Aedes Aegypti and Culex, consequently they breed more from mid-May to late September.

3) We are more likely to be stung in the morning, evening or at night as mosquitoes prefer to feed in a somewhat cool temperature. In the heat of the day they usually rest in a cool area.

4) Aedes Aegypti are attracted to dark places to lay their eggs.

5) Female mosquitoes locate their victims primarily through scent.

They are extremely sensitive to the carbon dioxide in exhaled breath, as well as several substances found in sweat and various body odours.

They are believed to be able to track potential prey for tens of metres. Some people attract more mosquitoes than others, apparently based on how they “smell” to a mosquito.

Mosquitoes can also detect heat, so they can find warm-blooded mammals and birds very easily once they get close enough.
