Chemarl Henry grabs stoppage-time winner for Devonshire Colts
Chemarl Henry was the toast of the dressing room after his late heroics powered Devonshire Colts to a 2-1 victory over St David’s Warriors in an exciting First Division clash at Lord’s on Sunday.
With the game deadlocked at 1-1, the experienced forward pounced in the third minute of added time to secure the points for the unbeaten league leaders.
Colts led 1-0 at the break courtesy of Keino Burch’s seventh-minute strike before Aaron Paynter equalised for Colts.
Coach Ray Jones was happy his Colts side come away with the spoils and avenge this team’s only loss of the season in the Shield final at Wellington Oval on New Year’s Day.
“It was a scrappy game with lots of fouls and conditions played a part,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“As this is the business end of the season, the three points is the most important thing.”
Elsewhere, Southampton Rangers boosted their promotion bid courtesy of a hard-fought 3-2 win over Boulevard Blazers at Southampton Oval.
Malachi Jones was the hero for the home team, scoring a hat-trick to put his side 3-1 up before Boulevard hit back late to keep the result in doubt until the final whistle.
Rangers were forced to chase the game after Dunn-Ya Taylor put Boulevard ahead in the ninth minute. Jones then took over, netting in the 36th, 51st and 54th minutes to put his side in the driving seat.
Khiry Easton pulled one back late but Rangers held on to secure the points and remain in contention for promotion to the Premier Division.
Rangers sit third in the First Division, a point adrift of second-place Robin Hood who edged Somerset Eagles 2-1 at White Hill Field.
Clay Darrell put Hood in front in the nineteenth minute before Michael Tyler Emery equalised for Eagles two minutes before the interval. Kenan Robinson grabbed Hood’s winner in the 87th minute.
Wolves’ promotion hopes suffered a setback after they lost 1-0 to Vasco da Gama at Bernard Park.
Vasco player-coach Leo Burgess led by example, scoring as his team’s late winner in second-half stoppage time.
“I think it was a good match,” Burgess said.
“Credit to the team, though. I think they are starting to become one, and it showed yesterday against Wolves.
“I think that game was like a testament to us coming together, really.”
Bottom team Ireland Island Rangers had a bye.
