Butterfield Mile champions pop into bank to pick up trophy
Dage Minors and Catherine Riihiluoma headed back to Front Street on Friday to pick up their trophies for their performances as the fastest local runners in the 2024 Butterfield Mile
The two champions picked up their trophies from Shawnette Griffin, head of retail banking and operations at Bank of Butterfield.
“The Butterfield Mile is a showcase event for Bermuda’s running community and as the sponsor we are delighted to be presenting these two awards to the island’s fastest female, Katie Riihiluoma, and fastest male, Dage Minors,” a spokesman for Butterfield said.
“Their performances in what marked the 35th year of this electric evening event were spectacular. Huge congratulations to them both and to all of the participants who tried out and raced this year. The challenge has been set for next year.”
Butterfield Mile co-race director, Heather Cooper was pleased to be able to honour Minors and Riihiluoma.
"Katie’s and Dage’s performance in the Butterfield Mile last Friday evening was nothing short of outstanding and speaks to the high calibre of local running talent we have on island,“ Cooper said
“Dage’s time of 4min 20sec was not only the fastest local male performance but also the overall fastest mile time beating the all of the international competitors for a second year in a row. Notably Katie’s time of 5:22 was only five seconds shy of the overall female winning time by American athlete Amy Piccolo.”
The Butterfield Mile is the first leg of the Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge and the event’s director of marketing, Anna Laura Hocking, is delighted that the event attracted more than 1,500 people to participate.
“The 2024 Chubb Triangle Challenge is being hailed as a success with close to 1,500 participants overall and approximately 500 coming from overseas, bringing with them almost an additional 300 persons (supporters) to the island,” Hocking said.
The 2025 Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge will take place from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19, with registration expected to open in late February.
