Customs officers who died in the line of duty were honoured yesterday at a special church service.

The service, which was held at St Paul AME Church in Hamilton, highlighted the Department of Customs in observance of International Customs Day on Friday.

Speaking on the significance of the department, Lucinda Pearman, the collector of customs, said: “The customs department continues to play an important role in the Bermuda economy and has maintained our mission, ‘Protecting Bermuda’s border and promoting economic development’.”

She added: “2024 will be dedicated to customs administrations’ efforts to support the customs officers of the future, encourage knowledge sharing, and heighten the sense of belonging to the global customs community with the theme ‘Customs — engaging traditional and new partners with purpose’.

“This theme aligns with the efforts to embrace our longstanding customs partners while embracing new ones.

“Our focus will remain on fulfilling our mandate of facilitating legitimate trade while enforcing our customs laws.”

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, said: “On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I extend gratitude to all of our customs officers and the work they do.

“I also thank the customs department for their outstanding efforts in protecting Bermuda and serving as a valuable resource for individuals aspiring to launch their businesses.

“Numerous budding entrepreneurs depend on the assistance of the customs department, and your officers have offered immense guidance in this regard.”

Long-service awards will be given for those who had been in customs for five years, ten years, 15 years, 20 years, 25 years, 35 years, 40 years and 45 years.

The department will also host the CA Road Race tomorrow and the TD Robinson Golf Tournament on Saturday.
