An American screenwriter hopes to turn his love for Bermuda into a television programme focused on the theft of the Tucker’s Cross.

Adam Pachter, who is based in Boston, said that over the course of several visits he began to think about the possibilities of a film or television show set on the island.

“Bermuda has this fascinating and unique culture behind it,” he said. “I started digging deeper into Bermuda’s history and I found out about the mystery of the Tucker’s Cross. I was just fascinated by that.

“People love unanswered mysteries and crime dramas, so I started thinking that Bermuda has its own fascinating unsolved mystery. Let’s write about that.”

Mr Pachter said he has worked as a Hollywood screenwriter for more than a decade, with several projects under his belt, including the independent thriller Black Bags.

He told The Royal Gazette that he first came to the island with his family in 2011 and fell in love with it.

“From Boston, Bermuda is the closest warm-weather destination we can get to in the winter,” he said. “With young children, it was just perfect. It seems to be almost set up for families.”

Mr Pachter said that before the pandemic he started to write a pilot script for what he envisioned as a limited series focused on a young woman who comes to the island after the death of her father, only to find herself entrenched in the mystery of the Tucker’s Cross.

He said that while the show would touch on the real history of the cross, which was discovered by a Bermudian diver, Teddy Tucker, and its subsequent theft, the rest of the story would be fiction.

Mr Pachter said that he recently returned to the project “full bore”, and on his most recent visit to the island, he spoke to many people about the show and the potential benefits it could bring.

He said that the production of the show on the island could create a wide variety of opportunities for Bermudians, highlight the island on the world stage and inject money into the local economy.

Mr Pachter said that a limited series would benefit hotels, caterers and those involved in the performing arts outside the busier summer season.

“Black Bags was shot in Guthrie, Oklahoma, in May 2021,” he said. “That was a small feature, but in just the small time we were there we brought hundreds of thousands of dollars of economic activity.”

Mr Pachter added that while he has been pleased by the level of enthusiasm towards the project from those he has spoken with, he was still hoping for more people to step forward to help bring the show to life.

“I’m hoping that in spreading the word people who have been involved with Bermuda’s arts scene and occasional film scene who might be interested will see this as an opportunity to get involved,” he said.
