Mia Fishel’s Chelsea through to Women’s Champions League quarter-final
Mia Fishel and her Chelsea team-mates sealed progression from the group stage of the Uefa Women’s Champions League with a game to spare.
The West London club advanced to the quarter-final of the competition courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 win over Spanish outfit Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
The result also sealed top spot for Chelsea, who have a three-point advantage and a superior head-to-head record over second-placed Hacken going into the last round of fixtures.
Fishel started the match and was unfortunate not to have converted captain Erin Cuthbert’s ball across goal before being replaced by forward Lauren James at the interval.
Norwegian midfielder Guro Reiten gave Chelsea the lead on the hour mark from the penalty spot after defender Niamh Charles was brought down in the box.
However, Real Madrid substitute Athenea del Castillo Beivide equalised eight minutes later. Australian winger Hayley Emma Rosa’s initial effort was saved, but Spanish forward Belvide dispatched the rebound.
With the game hanging in the balance, Chelsea regained the lead when Scottish midfielder Cuthbert’s low cross was deflected into the back of the net off Read Madrid goalkeeper Mylene Chavas, which ultimately proved to be the winner.
