London-based Carbon Underwriting Ltd, the specialist, independent managing general underwriter and Lloyd’s syndicate, has appointed Dale Willetts, formerly of Bermudian-headquartered Sompo International, as head of Specialty in addition to supporting the development of Carbon’s technology capabilities.

The company said Mr Willetts brings a wealth of leadership and specialty underwriting experience to the role and his priority this year will be to spearhead the development and growth of Carbon’s Accident & Health proposition.

Before joining Carbon, he was executive vice-president, head of Specialty Lines, for Sompo International for five years where he built the A&H portfolio, Carbon said.

In a career spanning 30 years, he has also held leadership roles with ANV, Travelers and other specialty underwriters in the field.

Nick Tye, chief executive at Carbon, said: “I am delighted that Dale has joined us to take up this key role. His deep understanding of the market, breadth of insurance knowledge and proven track record in senior leadership roles make him ideally placed to develop our capabilities across the Specialty portfolio.

“He will be a valuable addition to our leadership team and I know that we will benefit enormously from his expertise, insights and business acumen.”

Mr Willetts said: “I am thrilled to be joining Carbon at such an exciting time in its development.

“The company’s focus on transforming the delegating underwriting market by implementing superior in-house technology that supports quality underwriting, the ambition of its people and the entrepreneurial culture made my decision to join the business extremely easy.

“There are exciting opportunities in the market for nimble, forward-thinking companies like Carbon and I am looking forward to bringing my extensive sector experience and passion for innovation as the business evolves.”
