Patricka Ferguson hopes her poetry event this weekend will allow participants to embark on a creative journey to lead a more fulfilled life.

Ms Ferguson has hosted previous poetry workshops to help people use the art form to deal with their emotions.

“When I was introduced to poetry at the age 15, I fell in love with it. When introduced to free verse, up until that moment I thought everything had to rhyme or have a certain amount of lines,” said Ms Ferguson.

Poetry has been an outlet for Ms Ferguson to overcome some traumatic experiences.

“I survived a domestic violence relationship that turned into stalking on and off for a prolonged period of time. I used my poetry to work through the scars that situation had left with me,” said Ms Ferguson.

“I did an entire poetry show in 2018 about what it was like to go through and coming out on the other side. That was the catalyst for my healing journey.”

Poetry has given Ms Ferguson a voice and she remains eager to share her love of the art form with others at her workshop.

“My workshop will entail using poetry to aid those who attend to fully embrace the vision they have for their lives,” Ms Ferguson explained. Poetic vision boards using cardboard will be part of the workshop.

A few years ago, Ms Ferguson held a workshop called Poetic Approach to Healing at the Women’s Resource Centre.

“Those in attendance were able to speak about traumatic experiences that they were going through. The exercises that they get engaged in helped them to feel their emotions instead of push them down as we so often do when trying to survive,” said Ms Ferguson.

The poetic vision workshop will be held on Saturday at the Blue Diamond Lounge and is open to everyone.

Tickets are $50 and the event starts at 6.30pm.
