Young Goatz sniffing another basketball title
With two more matches left before the end of the regular Bermuda Basketball Association League, Young Goatz are clear at the top of the table.
Goatz, the defending champions, have picked up six wins and recorded two losses in eight matches. Despite those defeats coming in their last two matches, Goatz have outscored their opponents by 41 points so far this season, scoring 368 points and conceding 327.
Belco Rangers, who have won five of their seven matches, are second in the league with Kings third after four victories in nine matchers
The Goatz squad, comprised of Keedai Astwood, Szaine Wilson, Anthony Furbert, Jonathon Lugo, Yusef Te’Jour Riley, Ryan Rabain, Christian Fiddick, Raushon Tankard, Antione Jackson, Shawn Swainson and Shannon Thompson, are enjoying a break until their match against Reapers on February 10.
Riley, the Goatz captain, has been thrilled to be part of a squad in which most players have conttributed
“We are having an unusual season where there hasn't been one or two standout players,’’ Riley said.
“We all have the ability to step up in any given moment of the game We have Szaine Wilson, who’s still in high school, and is leading us in points.
“Ryan Rabain, who is 38 years old, is leading us in terms of rebounds, while Ryan and Shawn Swainson are both in the top three in the league in blocks per game.
“We really hang our hat on defence and intensity. We force teams to play a slow, deliberate and intense game.
“It’s really a game of attrition, forcing every possession to matter and seeing who has the ability to perform and execute when the game hangs in balance.”
