Blaiz Hall stars as St George’s cruise

St George’s Colts produced a clinical performance to destroy Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.
Two goals from winger Blaiz Hall and a strike by Amon Simons put St George’s 3-0 up at half time with Paul Simons extending the advantage in the second half much to the delight of St George’s head coach Jarreau Hayward, who was pleased with his side’s finishing.
“We took our chances,” he said. “This is key, to make the most of your goalscoring opportunities, and we did that.
“We want to finish as high as possible and we are also still in the FA Cup. There is room for improvement every game.”
The East End side had a shaky start despite having the higher share of possession and allowed their hosts to get forward and create a few clear-cut chances, the best falling to Jaellan Greaves who fired his effort well wide.
St George’s found their groove after the early flurry of Somerset opportunities and opened the scoring when Blaiz Hall drove through the home side’s defence and fired a low effort into the near post, which goalkeeper Yizharyah Williams allowed to trickle through his arms.
St George’s scored three goals in four minutes, their second coming when Kashe Hall swung a corner into the near post towards Paul Simons. Trojans failed to clear and Amon Simons took the loose ball under control before firing a beautiful low effort into the far post past the despairing dive of Williams.
The third came quickly after. Ari Cannonier was picked out nicely by Jibri Salaam and tried to square for Paul Simons, but his overhit pass luckily found Blaiz Hall on the far post and the winger did the rest, taking one touch before finishing into the far post.
Somerset's wasteful nature continued throughout the second half, although Greaves did force Jahquil Hill into a good save with a shot from just inside the penalty area.
The game was all but over in the 47th minute when Paul Simons got the easiest of goals to put St George’s even further ahead, taking one touch after Hall fed him inside the box before comfortably slotting into the empty net after an onrushing Williams tried to close down the angle
The home fans were treated to one short spell of pressure towards the end of an otherwise underwhelming performance, with Jaellan Greaves feeding Russell, who was fouled by Kurtis Minors just inside the box. However, the spot-kick was missed by Russell, who struck the post.
