The Mayor of St George would like to see progress on tackling unused or crumbling buildings in the town.

Quinell Francis reflected on a former bakery across from Somers Garden as well as the former police station on York Street.

She described the former bakery, where part of the roof and a wall are collapsed, as “an eyesore for all of us”.

Ms Francis added: “That is something that’s been dealt with by the Department of Planning and a demolition order has been sent out.”

She said that she spoke to Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, last month and that the building was supposed to have been demolished by now, with an opportunity for the Government to recoup costs.

Ms Francis added: “A building number has gone up so it looks like there is an active building application or permit.”

The permit number on the building indicates that it is for a commercial development. It was issued three years ago and will expire in August 2026.

The home affairs and public works ministries were contacted for information but were unable to provide responses by the time of publication.

Ms Francis said: “The police station is another one, right in the centre of our town.

“It’s owned by the Bermuda Government and the windows are boarded up with wood planks.

“We hear people talk about empty buildings and we have to set an example to ensure that we are doing our part to make sure our buildings are not empty.”

She added: “The Government should be doing the same because that’s a prominent building, the old police station, and people want to know what is actually happening with that building.

“It’s right across the visitors information centre.”

A comment was also requested from the Ministry of Public Works about the former police building but none was received by the time of publication.
