Public invited to guided tour of hotel’s art collection
A free, self-guided tour of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club’s contemporary art collection is available to the public throughout the month of February.
The tour has been developed by Diarmaid O’Sullivan, the hotel’s director of marketing, along with a team, and is narrated by Lisa Howie, the founder of Black Pony Gallery and former executive director of the Bermuda National Gallery.
It is already available to hotel guests through a passcode system but will open up to the public under the theme “For the Love of Art” throughout the month, and is available by scanning a QR code.
Mr O’Sullivan said: “We know how important art is to the identity of the hotel. It’s an integral part of the whole experience. It is very much a living museum where you can interact with the work.
“This tour is an evolution of sharing more information; we wanted to make it more accessible.
“You can do the tour from home. It is recorded and you can listen to it. We Identified some key pieces we wanted to focus on and then built the content around it.
“We came up with a wonderful script, and Lisa’s voice immediately brings you in. It’s a very soothing, natural and conversational voice. The script and delivery is informative but geared towards simple conversation that everyone can enjoy. You don’t have to be an art critic to enjoy the experience. It takes about half an hour.
“We had incredible feedback from our guests. People do want to find out more about the art and it should be available to anyone.”
The tour describes the collection as “remarkable, featuring a museum-level checklist of key modernists, American and British pop artists, and contemporary provocateurs”.
It includes some of the greatest names in modern art, such as Julien Opie, Shepard Fairey, Keith Allen Haring, Banksy, Andy Warhol, René Magritte, Bermudian artist Carlos Santana, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama and Pablo Picasso.
Mr O’Sullivan added: “We took several walks around the hotel’s public areas to see what to include and what would resonate with people. It has to be interesting, keep people’s attention and have a little information that will make them want to find out more about that artist.
“It’s part of the unique experience the Hamilton Princess offers when it comes to ensuring you have a living, memorable experience.”
