Driver disqualified after being caught four times over the limit

A 61-year-old Pembroke man was banned from the roads and fined after being caught operating his car while more than four times over the legal limit for alcohol.

The court heard that Jose Aguiar was operating his vehicle on Cedar Avenue in Pembroke on January 12 when it rolled into a vehicle in front of it.

The crash caused damage to the bumper of the vehicle in front.

Officers arrived on the scene and found Aguiar in the driver’s seat of his car.

They demanded that he turn off the ignition and get out of the vehicle, which he did. They smelt alcohol on his breath and noticed that he was unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.

Aguiar was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test showed 323 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

He was fined $1,500 and banned from the roads for 18 months.
