Focusing on the road while driving can prevent collisions and crashes and save lives, the Bermuda Road Safety Council said.

The BRSC highlighted how police recorded about 1,090 road “collisions” last year.

Of those, 13 involved fatalities and 112 serious injuries, while 54 were alcohol-related and 228 were caused by inattentive driving.

It added: “As we enter the month of February, let’s refocus and unite in our commitment to good driving behaviours and reducing distractions.

“Distractions, such as texting, phone calls, adjusting the radio or even daydreaming, divert our attention from the road and increase the risk of accidents.

“Every time we get behind the wheel, we hold not only our lives but also the lives of others in our hands.”

The council urged motorists to use hands-free devices if they must make or receive phone calls, be aware of the road while driving and eliminate distractions.

Drivers can avoid distractions by putting their mobile phones on silent or out of reach and adjusting their seats and music before starting their journey.

The BRSC concluded: “Remember don’t drink and drive, drive with care and caution and slow down Bermuda.”
