Volunteers at the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda donated more than 28,000 hours of service to the organisation last year.

Patrick Cerra, the president of HAB, said these volunteers allow the organisation, which has 12 salaried staff, to “provide funding to Bermuda Hospitals Board, managers of the island’s only hospitals”.

Last year, adult volunteers contributed 23,691 hours and candy stripers completed 4,562.

Mr Cerra added that the volunteers “provide a range of services absolutely free, including manning reception desks at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, assisting non-resident patients and their families, wait service in The Pink Café, as well as sorting, stocking and sales assistance at the Gift Shop and The Barn.”

Income from the Pink Café, Gift Shop and The Barn allows HAB to purchase medical equipment and supplies for the BHB.

Scott Pearman, the chief executive of the BHB, called the HAB a “valued BHB partner” and said the volunteers have “made so much possible at our hospitals over the years”.

He said: “Here are just a few of the items they’ve donated — a CT scanner, an X-ray machine, ambulances, specialised medical vehicles and wheelchairs.

“Since its inception in 1953, the HAB has supported us with donations worth millions.

“We thank each of their many volunteers for making this possible.”
