Selah Tuzo impresses for Storm against North Village
Selah Tuzo produced yet another MVP display in Storm’s 57-44 victory over North Village in a Bermuda Netball Association Senior League encounter at Bernard Park on Thursday.
Tuzo, who is flying back to Canada where she is enrolled at York University on Sunday, combined well upfront with Nabiilah Nasir and Zakiyah Durham to give the Village defence a hard time. Goal shooter Nasir top scored for Storm with 42 goals, and Tuzo chipped in with 15 points.
Last Saturday, the 20-year-old’s first match for Storm since the Covid-19 pandemic ended in a 55-35 loss to Phoenix Heat, but she made sure her childhood team was victorious against Village and leapfrog their opponents into third position in the league.
Captain Debré Evans, Shenova Edwards, and Jamir Hatherley, a member of Storm’s under-17 side, were solid at the back and neutralised the threat posed by Village goal shooter Darrika Simons and goal attack Coriah Simmons. Simons was on target 33 times, Simmons contributed four points, and Zhanae Simmons had seven goals.
It was satisfying win for Storm after they lost 42-24 to the same opponents at the end of last month.
“It was an awesome game of netball,’’ Evans said. “It was really good to see some phenomenal netball from both teams, and it was good to see Village had 17 and under players and we had 17 and under players.
“Our defender of the game was a 17 and under player. We really encourage our junior players to come up and play in the senior team to get exposure.
“I want to give kudos to Village and us of course, at the end of the day we made the game magical.
“It was more important for us to win because we actually lost to Village, so this was our comeback.
“For the past few years, it’s been a good match-up with Village. We play similar type of netball so it’s always a game we always look forward to.
“I think we just played simple netball, you practice and you show it out in games. I'm really proud of my team for turning up. We've had a rough season, lost five players to school so it’s really good to have everyone back.
“It’s sad that it happened at the end of the season, but it’s good that we’re slowly coming back to what we were.”
Evans spoke on the kind of impact Tuzo’s impact has had on the team in the two matches she played.
“Selah’s always been a phenomenal player and it’s sad she has to go to school to further her education,’’ the Storm captain said.
“All of us have been playing netball together since we were about twelve, so the chemistry is there.
“When a few people leave the chemistry kind of falls apart, so having her back uplifted and brought the chemistry back.”
