North Village coach Kenny Thompson is not seeking any favours from PHC’s opponents in the Premier Division title race.

With five matches to go, Thompson’s Village trail champions PHC by just a point. Barring any dramatic dip in form from the leading pack, the title is shaping up to be a two-horse race between PHC and Village, as Devonshire Cougars, who were in contention for the better part of the season, are now six points off the top position.

“We’re not focused on looking for from other teams against PHC,’’ Thompson said.

Village, last crowned champions when the 2019-20 season could not be completed owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, have only suffered one defeat this season.

That only loss was at the hands of PHC, who won 1-0 at home at Stadium Lane on December 21.

If the two teams continue winning, the title could be decided when they meet in the penultimate round of fixtures on March 10. PHC have won two of the three matches between the two sides this season.

What should give Thompson hope is that sides like Cougars, Young Men's Social Club and St George’s Colts have proven that PHC can be beaten.

Cougars and Social Club took three points against Quincy Hunt’s team, while St George’s, their league opponents on Sunday, have just booted them out of the FA Cup.

Since those early setbacks against Cougars and Social Club in October, PHC have now gone on a nine-match winning streak.

In the process, Hunt’s men have scored 25 goals, while their defence has been only breached six times.

St George’s, who are slowly recovering from a disastrous start to the season pose a big threat to PHC’s fine run.

Jarreau Hayward’s men, fired up by the return of a number of key players from injury, have won their last two matches, but both were against X-Roads and Somerset Trojans, teams below them in the table.

Nevertheless, St George’s, sure to enjoy good support from the crowd, have had their confidence boosted by scoring seven goals in those two wins.

Before that, they had recorded three draws in a row, one of those a 3-3 against Village, a game they should have won since they were 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes.

In their last league encounter, Village, who face Dandy Town at Bernard Park on Sunday – mindful of the fact that goal difference could be decisive, recorded a massive 7-0 win over struggling X-Roads.

Goals from Jalen Harvey and Liam Evans – who both scored twice, substitute Jordan Outerbridge, Pierre Smith, and an own goal by X-Roads defender Josef Smith handed Village their biggest win so far this season.

Thompson is pretty certain Village are fully in charge of their own fate, as they are in a spot they wanted to be at this stage of the season.

“We’re in a position that we like to be in, which is to be in control of our own destiny, and they are as well,’’ Thompson told The Royal Gazette.

“We just have to keep going, stay focused and keep performing to put ourselves in a position when it comes to crunch time.

“We cannot afford to look ahead because if you look ahead, you stumble in a step or two before that. We can only look at one step at a time.

“We’re only doing what we can do at this time. We still have to do what they have to do against the opponents that they have.”

The action begins this afternoon when Social Club and Paget square off at Police Field.

At Wellington Oval, Hamilton Parish, with no win in their last four matches, clash with Cougars.

Two draws and the same number of defeats have seen Parish fall off from the to top four.

Cougars have a chance to steer clear of the likes of Paget and St George’s, while keeping an eye for an slip-up from the top two.

While focus is on the top two tomorrow, X-Roads as well as Trojans, the teams at the wrong end of the table meet at Lord’s.
