Cecoy Robinson confident youth squad can do Bermuda proud
Bermuda coach Cecoy Robinson is adamant the team chosen to represent Bermuda in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship Qualifier in St Kitts & Nevis will do the island proud.
Robinson has no doubt that his squad possesses the talent, versatility and depth required in order to clinch the sole qualifying spot on offer.
“It’s a really, really good team and I think we tick all the boxes,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“We have a few players that can play in different positions and that is crucial especially with being able to pick only 20 players.
“You have to have some versatility with the players that you have, and I think we tick all the boxes with the ones that were selected.”
Robinson admits suqd selection was an extremely difficult task and has urged those players overlooked not to be discouraged .
“It was very difficult trying to pick the team and I know some players are probably disappointed to miss out, but that’s part of the process and we move forward,” he added.
“They are not out of the plans altogether. The object is to make it out of the group so that when we come back they can be part of the pool again and we go again. That’s the plan for us.”
Included in Bermuda’s squad are defender Harry Twite, who made his debut for the senior national team during the Concacaf Nations League and was also at the Island Games in Guernsey last year.
While the final squad has been named, Robinson has yet to identify a captain to lead the team out on to the pitch at the SKNFA Technical Centre in Basseterre.
“We haven’t designated a captain yet,” Robinson said. “We have some ideas and once we get the group together we will see how the team responds to players in their presence and then we will go from there.
Bermuda, who have been drawn in group F alongside Jamaica, Grenada and Martinique, are attempting to make their second appearance at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship after they were eliminated in the group stage at the event in Costa Rica in 2017 under Kyle Lightbourne.
Only the group winner in St Kitts will advance to the 2024 tournament, where they will be joined by the six pre-seeded top-ranked nations.
Bermuda departed the island on Monday for Miami, where they continue their preparations before arriving in St Kitts tomorrow.
“We will have a pretty intense training session and then relax, go over some different things and then it’s on to the fine detail in preparation of our first match,” Robinson said.
“We are not having any warm-up matches so basically we are just going to focus on us and try to be ready and fresh for the tournament.”
Bermuda will kick off their campaign against Grenada on Saturday before playing Martinique on February 26 and Jamaica on February 28.
