A man who was involved in a life-changing collision has been disqualified from driving all vehicles for two years.

Howard Mello, 45, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court last month to causing Kali Williams grievous bodily harm by riding his bike without due care and attention. He reappeared in court for sentencing.

The collision occurred on Point Shares Road in January 2022, and resulted in Mello losing his left arm.

According to prosecutor Matthew Frick, Mr Williams sustained “relatively minor” injuries from the incident.

During today’s appearance, Mello, who lives at the Salvation Army’s hostel for the homeless and is working with the charity Home, told senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson he had to “re-evaluate life” after the collision, which he did not remember much of after waking up from a coma.

In addition to being banned, Mello was fined $1,000 for the offence, which Ms Anderson converted into 50 hours of community service.
