Bermuda recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jamaica to progress to the main draw of the ITF North, Central American and Caribbean Junior Davis Cup regional pre-qualifying round-robin in the Dominican Republic yesterday.

Terry Smith’s side now face the No 1 seeds Guatemala in the main draw’s first round today.

Against Jamaica, Tristan Pettit started the day by winning the first singles match 6-2, 6-4. Zachary McGuire followed up with a straight-sets victory 6-3, 6-2 to confirm thw win for Bermuda before Pettit and Tobiah Goodchild finished the sweep with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-2 victory.

Smith shared his thoughts on how they plotted the downfall of Jamaica’s skilful players.

“Jamaica were a decent team and their players had very efficient strokes, especially solid forehands,” Smith said.

“However, we were able to strategically take away that strength which made them more vulnerable. Therefore, the Bermuda players were able to inflict their own offence successfully.”

Despite having no idea about Guatemala's style of play, Smith expects the Bermuda lads to give it their best shot.

“Guatemala are the No 1 seeds,’’ Smith added. “We haven't seen them play, however, we intend to do the best. We have an early start on Wednesday due to poor Tuesday weather.”
