Direct Bermuda-Jamaica flights planned
A direct flight from Bermuda to Jamaica is planned for July.
The July 31 flight will be via a private jet organised by ScottsCraft, which is run by Lawrence Scott. It returns to Bermuda on August 14.
The aircraft will have arrived in Bermuda from the Dominican Republic on July 30 to coincide with Cup Match.
ScottsCraft, the umbrella company of Bermuda Direct Air Service, initiated a direct service between Bermuda and the Dominican Republic last year, and Jamaica is the next on the list of Caribbean destinations it plans to connect to Bermuda.
The flights and routes are being scheduled to coincide with Caribbean and Bermudian holidays and celebrations. Barbados, Trinidad and St Kitts are also under consideration, Mr Scott said.
“We have done our market research. We have identified the market and can confirm there is demand for the route to Jamaica,” he said.
“We have had time to crunch the numbers since our proof-of-concept flight in January.
"Without giving away our secret sauce, there are certain routes and tourism numbers we look at, and there are other metrics and data we use.
“Also, coming out of our Dominican Republic flight, we saw a number of passengers originating from Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica. We have found that the number of persons coming out of Jamaica will be able to sustain a direct flight.”
The company has introduced a tiered pricing system for the flights — the earlier the flight is booked the cheaper it is. Any flights booked 90 days in advance will be $1,600 one way and $2,200 round trip.
Prices continue to rise up to $1,950 one way and $2,900 return for flights booked after Bermuda Carnival on June 12.
Mr Scott said: “Our pricing is in line with and competitive with American Airlines’ business class to the Caribbean, but we get you there three to four times faster. It’s cheaper than going through London.”
The flight is on the 14-seat Gulfstream IV, the same craft that has been used to service the Dominican Republic. Mr Scott said he anticipates four Jamaica flights per year with a flight time of 2½ hours.
ScottsCraft has been working on introducing “specialty flights”, which revolve around the Caribbean events calendar, including test matches, Crop Over, cricket World Cups and the independence days of key Caribbean destinations.
