Bermuda contingent impress in Daytona
Bermuda Motocross Association president Gannon Trott has hailed the island’s impressive showing at the Ricky Carmicheal Daytona Amateur Supercross event held in Daytona, Florida.
Siblings Jazuri and Jazai Thompson, Aaron Cannonier, Kai-Jun Simons and King Clarke all held their own competing in the various divisions in trying conditions at the Daytona International Speedway.
Cannonier placed 13th among the 27 riders that competed in the Vet 30 plus B and C class while Jazuri Easton- Thompson finished 8th among the 29 riders in the 250 C junior class and 9th in the 29-strong 125 C class.
Simons came 13th in the 31-strong College Class, Clarke 19th among the 27 riders in the 51cc Limited Group 1 class and Jazai Easton-Thompson 25th among the 27 riders in the 85cc Limited Group 1 class.
“We had five members of the Bermuda Motocross Association participate in the Ricky Carmichael Supercross that’s held every year in Daytona and we were represented pretty good,” Trott told The Royal Gazette.
“The conditions were very treacherous; they had a lot of rain the night before and the track was flooded, which made challenging racing. But our guys represented well and I am proud of them.
“As always, anybody that has the opportunity to go away to ride and represent us is just a plus. And I give our guys all the praise, congratulate them and wish them continued success in their endeavours.”
Meanwhile, the BMA will be celebrating its 52nd anniversary and St John’s Ambulance Appreciation Day during racing at Bermuda Motorsports Park on Sunday, which the public have been invited to attend.
“We are celebrating our 52nd anniversary as well as St John’s Appreciation Day this Sunday, so we are riding and are going to give a donation to St John’s for volunteering to help us out every race day,” Trott said.
“We hope to make it a fun day and vendors will be there. It’s going to be an overall successful day and hopefully the weather holds up for us.”
