Bermuda to be represented at under-19 rugby tournament in Mexico
Bermuda will be represented at the combined Rugby Americas North Men’s Under-19 and Senior Women’s tournaments in Mexico.
An Under-19 contingent from the island is due to compete in the five-day event, which is scheduled to be hosted at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico’s Deportivo Alfredo Harp Helu grounds, from July 10.
Both competition brackets will consist of 15-a-side format matches, with matches from each tournament being played concurrently across the days.
“RAN are delighted to host the Men’s U19s and Senior Women’s XVs in Mexico, a Union that has both successfully supported and hosted Sevens and Men’s U19 events in the past,” said Niall Brooks, the RAN general manager.
“2024 marks an important milestone for our region’s Senior Women’s 15 A-side rugby as the competition will culminate in full, 80-minute international matches for all teams with World Rugby ranking points at stake, furthering the development of the Women’s game.”
Mexican Rugby Federation president Ernesto Sainz spoke of his excitement at having the opportunity to host the tournament.
“For Rugby Mexico, it’s an honour having been awarded as organiser for the RAN XVs Tournament for Senior Women’s and Men’s Under-19 categories,” he said.
“We strongly believe that for the athletes of our region, competition is everything and by bringing them these kinds of opportunities we are helping to develop more rugby structures locally and internationally.
“We embrace and recognise the enthusiasm of all regional Unions that are pushing forward so hard the internal and international activities.”
“Our community in Mexico is thrilled to support this year’s RAN XVs tournament.”
