Talented young athletes Jaeda Grant and Jackson Langley put in dominant displays at the Bermuda School Sports Federation high school track and field finals before a huge thunderstorm forced the postponement of the event.

Grant and Langley took the honours in the 3,000 metres at Flora Duffy Stadium, with the girls getting the chance to run before the track filled with water, while the boys finished their races in heavy rain with visibility impaired.

Grant and Langley will be back in action in the 1,500m on Thursday, which now promises to to be an action-filled day with the postponed events from Tuesday being held in the morning and the remainder of the two-day meeting held in the evening.

Manny Faria, BSSF administrator, explained why he was forced to forge ahead with the inter-school competition despite the poor weather forecast.

“We had to postpone everything once there was lightning and thunder,’’ Faria said.

“We thought of postponing Tuesday until Wednesday, but unfortunately the stadium has been booked by one of the primary schools for their sports day on Wednesday.

“The weather forecast for Thursday looks pretty good, so we’re going to start at 9.30am until about 1.30pm. The evening session will start at 5pm with the final races starting at 7.30pm.”

Among the races to look forward to on Thursday are the over-16 800 and 1,500 metres, in which Jake Smith is expected to take to the track, while some of the island’s best young sprinters will also put their talent on display in the 100 and 200 metres and 4x100m relays.

The triple jump, discus and shot put were all completed on Tuesday, with the javelin, long jump and high jump scheduled to take place on Thursday.
