Fundraising for fun: volunteers join forces for community
A group of friends with a penchant for fun-spirited fundraising has teamed up this month for another good cause.
The social development network Betta Dais, founded by Jai and Marquis Burgess, is holding its annual golf tournament on March 30 to help a student in need to transition to middle school this September.
Karim Creary, a lawyer who pitches in with legal aid to the group’s charitable causes, said the group came together with its inaugural Betta Dais Invitational golf tournament last year to raise $5,000 for the runner Dage Minors, with the support of the St Regis Bermuda Resort and other sponsors.
“This year it’s the same thing — rather than sports, we’re trying to focus on education,” Mr Creary said.
“A few of our members, myself included, went to Somersfield Academy. We decided to raise the same amount this year.”
The school has vetted and chosen a student seeking to transition from the public school system to Somersfield’s M1 year.
Mr Creary said: “We’re playing golf and raising the money. Our goal is just to help.
“Obviously $5,000 won’t pay for it all, but at least for one semester they will be able to breathe a little easier.”
Betta Dais is a network of friends combining good times with volunteering.
They got together in 2021, beginning with a clothing drive to help a friend running a charity in Vietnam.
Other activities included a food drive to assist Aaron Crichlow and the group Bermuda is Love, and helping St George’s Cricket Club with its Good Friday football tournament.
Mr Creary said the group looked for “fun activities to help initiatives we believe in — it was just about everybody participating to have a good time”.
Members of the group grew up around Mr Minors and decided to launch the tournament last year in aid of the self-funded runner.
“We knew how hard it was for him to train as well as work.”
Now the group is partnered with Somersfield Academy to bring a tournament to the Five Forts golf course in St George’s.
The format of the tournament is Captain’s Choice, consisting of 18 teams — with each team of four contributing $600.
Along with a prize for first place, there are prizes for best-dressed team, closest to the pin, longest drives and others.
St George’s Cricket Club will serve as the awards venue.
Mr Creary described Betta Dais as a grassroots group aimed at connecting with helping agencies and charities.
He added: “It’s basically about how we can help, and how can we do it in ways for participants to get a fun way to give back.”
Mr Creary said the group had already sold out tickets for team to sign up and was now in talks with sponsors.
He said the group wanted to “to spread the word about the tournament, showing our peers that we have the power to make our own difference on the island and that giving back can be as simple as playing a round of golf”.
