Local players facing some of best in world at Bermuda Open
More than 30 international squash players from 12 different countries will be heading to Bermuda this month for the IQUW Bermuda Open.
Six local players also feature in the main draws with the United States, Canada, England, Colombia, Mexico, France, Switzerland, Latvia, Egypt, Malaysia, Barbados and Guyana also represented at the tournament, which begins on April 24.
Bermuda Squash Racquets Association president Micah Franklin, who recently won the national championships, has been handed a wild card into the tournament and will open up on the opening night against Cory McCartney, of Canada, who is ranked 167th in the world.
Taylor Carrick finished runner-up to Franklin at the national championships and has been drawn to play his first match against Mexican Cesar Segundo Corona, who is 223rd in the world rankings.
Wild card Anaya Smith will face Colombian opposition in the shape of Nicolas Serna, who enters the tournament with a world ranking of 196, while Bermuda’s final male challenger Noah Browne takes on world No 186 Laszlo Godde, from France.
Top seed for the men’s event is Spencer Lovejoy, from the United States, who is ranked 68th in the world. He has been given a bye in the first round.
In the women’s event Eilidh Franklin has been drawn to play against Canada’s Nikki Tood, who is ranked 194th in the world at present. Winner of the recent national championships, Melina Turk, has been drawn against Malaysia’s Wen Li Lai, who sits in 154th position in the world rankings.
Latvian Ineta Hopton, ranked 54th in the world tour, is top seed for the women’s event and will play Margot Prow of Barbados in the first round.
