Seri Fisher in Las Vegas for North American Karate Championships

Seri Fisher picked up a pair of silver medals at the North American Open Karate Championships in Las Vegas.

The 14-year-old was among the youngest to compete in the 14-15 age group after celebrating her fourteenth birthday just a week earlier and was facing her toughest competition to date after being unbeaten in Bermuda.

Despite more than 2,000 Karateka participants from 21 countries competing, Fisher was not overawed by the large percentage of black belts on show, securing a pair of 3-0 wins over American opponents.

That set up a contest for the gold medal against a higher-ranked opponent who also held an unblemished record and Fisher had to give best, losing 3 - 0 victory to the USA.

The defeat meant Fisher faced Irish opposition in a fight for the silver and bronze medal and she triumphed 2-1 in a split decision to secure a runner-up finish.

The Kobudo (weapons) competition was held within minutes of the Kata, leaving no time for rest or preparation, but using a bo (wooden staff) Seri won a second silver medal.

The event, which was a qualifier for the world championships in Mexico and the AAU Championships in Florida, had ten rings operating at the same time with the action fast and frenetic.

After the event Fisher thanked her Dojo Zenji Ryu with Senseis Roots Philips and Talia Iris for their dedication.
