Camerin Pickering’s attempt to become the first Bermudian archer to qualify for the Olympics via the Continental Qualifier of the Americas in Colombia was thwarted after he lost 6-4 to Oscar Ticas of El Salvador 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Pickering, 24, who headed into the quarter-final encounter in Medellin full of confidence after knocking out Guatemalan Thomas Flossbach in the round of 16, put up a great fight against the higher-ranked Ticas.

It was never going to be easy for the young Bermudianagainst the 37-year-old Ticas, who qualified for the Rio Olympics at the same Colombian city but never took part in the global showpiece after failing a doping test and receiving a one-year ban.

“While I was unable to secure an individual position for the Olympics I was pleased with my performance,’’ Pickering told The Royal Gazette.

“I was very confident and comfortable going into match play. At every stage of the match I worked on staying focused and calming the nerves.”

Pickering now joins Bernard Wade and Jaydon Roberts for the team qualifying opportunity in Colombia, starting on Wednesday.

The trio, together with Robin Selley, the only female, will be travelling to Turkey for the final shot at individual Olympic qualification in the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage 4, to be held from June 18 to 24.

“I have another opportunity in June for a shot at an individual position for the Olympics and our team have an opportunity to secure a team spot later this week,’’ Pickering said.

“We are now preparing for the Olympic team qualifiers which commence on Wednesday.”

Ross Roberts, the Bermuda head coach, was pleased with Pickering’s efforts to make it to the quarter-final stage.

“Reaching this position is a huge accomplishment for Bermuda,’’ Roberts said.

“Camerin finished fifth overall and shot well against Oscar Ticas, who is ranked 63rd in the world.

“Team Bermuda finished well in the qualifying rounds and Camerin’s performance in the eliminations enabled him to secure a position in the quarter-finals.”
