Students in Pembroke who are preparing for exams next week received donations of snacks to help get them through.

Deanna DeShield and Pam Wade, on behalf of Pembroke Parish Council, delivered the gifts at Dellwood Middle School.

Pupils at West Pembroke Primary School, Northlands Primary School and Victor Scott Primary School will also benefit from donations.

About 180 children in total will enjoy the goods, which include oranges, yoghurts and granola bars.

Ms DeShield, who was a teacher for 42 years, said: “We came today to make a donation to all of the schools in Pembroke that will be taking the Checkpoint exam next week.

“We just wanted to provide them with some healthy refreshments to nourish and sustain them as they take their tests.

“We want to wish all of the students the very best.”

She added: “These donations include healthy refreshments for the P6 and M3 students which will energise and sustain them next week as they sit their [Cambridge International] Checkpoint exams.

“We always do some form of community service but we thought we would switch it up this time and do something for the schools rather than individuals in the community.”

Terrylynn Doyle, deputy principal at Dellwood, said: “It is awesome. We have community partnerships with a couple of groups in the community and it is positive because we want to make sure that the children are nourished before they take their exam.

“Some children may come to school hungry, and this is an opportunity to respond to that need.”
