Nahki Wells’s most prolific spell of the season has come at an extremely difficult time as he mourns the death of one of his biggest supporters.

The Bristol City striker has netted three goals in his last two outings while coming to terms with the recent passing of his grandfather, Bobby Wells, who has been in his corner throughout his remarkable career.

“Having lost my papa has been heavy on my mind and heavy on me personally, but equally it's a bit of a relief to perform well to make my papa proud,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“That fills my heart with joy and I know he would be smiling down proud of me.

“He's had a part to play in this [scoring streak] happening and has been one of my biggest supporters in my career. So emotionally a great moment for myself and my family because in a tough time it would have put a smile on everybody's face for sure. I know my papa would be jumping with joy right now, that's for sure.”

The 33-year-old achieved another career milestone amid his ongoing grief last week when he became only the seventh player to score 100 goals in the Championship after coming off the bench and scoring a brace in City’s 5-0 win at home to Blackburn Rovers.

“It's an amazing achievement to be among that club,” Wells added. “Only six other people have done it, so to carve myself in the history books in that regard is an amazing achievement as well. A very proud moment and very delighted.”

Compatriot and former Manchester City striker Shaun Goater has hailed Wells’s remarkable feat which he attributes to his vast experience and tactical awareness playing at this level.

“It’s an amazing achievement and he’s now so experienced I am sure every team he faces, when he's playing and starting, the team talk would be about how they will have to stop Nahki Wells and not give him opportunities because he has seen these scenarios so many times,” said Goater, who netted 84 goals in 184 appearances for City

“He understands what the solution is to any given situation. If it's a player that gets towards the byline, he understands that scenario. Whether it’s a cross coming in, understanding where to be to be able to attack that ball and potentially get there before defenders.

“When his.team-mates are driving towards him, he’s understanding that scenario, so as a centre forward he understands the scenarios and recognises that space is his best friend, and that space could be behind the defence or could be in front.

“Him knowing and seeing these scenarios and understanding the solutions to them has made him such a brilliant striker and why he’s been able to score the goals he’s scored reaching the 100 mark and now going on to score even more.

“I would say if Nahki Wells was playing at a higher level he would score even more goals because what some people don’t understand sometimes is once you understand the scenarios and the solutions to them, if you’re playing with better players, then you get better service. They are also on the same wavelength and at that level he’d score even more goals.

“It sounds as though I am being disrespectful to his team-mates, but I just know having seen him play enough times that he’s that experienced in those scenarios that he would score even more goals. I am really pleased that he's doing well and continues to fly the flag.”

Former Bermuda captain Wells has scored eight goals in all competitions this season, including seven in the Championship, despite having been sidelined for two months with a serious ankle injury.

He followed up his memorable brace against Rovers by coming off the bench and grabbing an equaliser from the penalty spot in the 101st minute to rescue a point for City in a 1-1 draw at home against his former club Huddersfield Town last Saturday.

“It's not been the best of seasons for me of course,” Wells said. “But to come on the pitch and have an impact and score some goals is a great feeling for sure.”
