Steven Bremar defeated John Orr 4-3 in an exciting final at Watford Sports Club to win the Tony DeSilva Memorial Cup for the second time.

In a best-of-seven frames, Bremar raced to a 3-0 lead, but Orr fought back after the interval to win the next three to make it 3-3, which took the contest to a decider.

Bremar clinched the final frame 85-32 to secure a title he won for the first time during the 2018-19 season.

Bremar, 62, was delighted to win a competition held in honour of Tony DeSilva, his former team-mate, who died in June 2015.

“It’s always an achievement, I've played snooker long enough to know that when you play, you want to win,’’ Bremar said.

“Playing John is always a challenge, he knows the game. I went up 3-0 and he came back to make it 3-3.

“Sometimes when you’re leading and somebody comes back, it makes you more nervous.

“I’m happy I prevailed in the end, I got a good start for the decider. I felt more comfortable as far as taking that trophy.

“The late Tony DeSilva actually played with us, so the pleasure of winning is much sweater.

“He was one of the guys that brought me through when we played at the same club, Watford Sports Club. We moved on, we now play at Warwick Workmen's Club.

“I started my career at Watford, I ended up playing with him in the latter part of the years. He played on the first team and I played on the second team.”

Bremar is seeking more honours when he goes in defence of his Bermuda Open title next Saturday. He faces Matt Garrod in the final at Spanish Boat Club.

In the Mike Zimmerman Team Challenge, Sandys Boat Club beat Spanish Point I 3-0 to be crowned champions.

Sandys captain, Martin Siese, opened the scoring when he took out Todd Dziak 65-25 in the first of two frames together. Siese then capitalised on that by taking the next 39-35 on the black.

Stewart Greenslade, the Point captain, succumbed 44-37 to Peter Bromby in the third frame, on the final black, 44-37 to end his team’s title hopes for this competition.

In league action, the battle continued for second position, after Warwick Workmen's secured an unassailable lead to win the championship for the first time in five years.

SBC defeated SPBC I 4-2 in their rescheduled outstanding match at Spanish Point.

Siese opened the scoring for SBC when he defeated Chris Dakin 61-29 in the first frame.

Todd Dziak equalised for Point, when he dispatched Richie Beale 88-15 in the first of two frames together.

Beale restored the lead for Sandys when he overcame Dziak 44-35 in the second of their two frames.

The fourth frame saw Paul Fedden make it three for Sandys, when he took out Alan Smith 62-8 in the first of their two frames together.

Greenslade clawed the next one back with a 43-32 triumph over Siese.

Victory belonged to Sandys however, as Paul Fedden sealed the win, taking out Smith once again, this time around winning 76-17.

The result rules Point I out of the race for the league’s second position.

Runners-up will be decided when Watford, the other contenders, take on Point I in the remaining tie of the season, to be played next Tuesday at Spanish Point.
