Conditional discharge after man admits having bladed article

Police found a man with a knife during a traffic stop in Pembroke.

James Smith, 39, admitted having the weapon, which had a 3.5in blade, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that officers doing speed checks stopped Smith, from Pembroke, on Palmetto Road on September 3.

Smith admitted having the knife while being questioned by officers and was taken to the Hamilton Police Station.

However, a letter given to the court stated that Smith had the knife for work purposes.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson sentenced Smith to a 24-month conditional discharge for the offence and warned him to not carry any more knives in public.
