Erica Hawley secures top-20 finish in China

Erica Hawley continued her impressive form at the World Triathlon Cup Chengdu in China on Monday.

The 26-year-old finished fourteenth among the 46-strong Elite Women’s field competing against some of the world’s best on the Olympic distance racecourse.

Hawley completed the 1,500 metres swim in 20 min 41 sec, the 40.56 kilometres bike leg in 1hr 0min 27 sec and the 10K run in 36:22 for a combined time of 1:59:08.

The Bermudian had momentum heading into the event after achieving one of her career-best performances by finishing in the World Triathlon Cup Wollongong in Australia the previous weekend.

Switzerland’s Julie Derron won gold at the WTC Chengdu in 1:55:18, with Sweden’s Tilda Månsson (1:56:09) and Poland’s RoksanaSlupek (1:56:14) claiming the silver and bronze.

Hawley was one of two Bermudians in action in China as Tyler Smith finished 24th among the 53-strong Elite Men’s field.

Smith finished the swim in 18.20, the bike leg in 53.36 and the run in 32.54 for a total time of 1:46.01.

Great Britain’s Max Stapley took the gold medal in 1:43:25mins, German Jonas Schomburg (1:43:32) silver and New Zealand’s Tayler Reid (1:43:39) bronze.
