Start date for Spurling Hill works shifted to July

Extensive roadworks at Spurling Hill will start in July — two months later than planned, the City of Hamilton said today.

The works were expected to begin this weekend, but the City said that the date was moved back as a result of several factors including “contractor availability and acquirement of materials”.

In addition, the City took into consideration traffic congestion at the junction.

Donald Dawkins, the project manager, said: “When dealing with a project of this scope, some degree of ‘project drift’ can be expected.

“With the school summer holidays right around the corner, it made sense to delay the project by a few months to a time when traffic will be significantly lower and road congestion minimised.”

The works are expected to be completed within five to six weeks, and the City plans to employ a “comprehensive” traffic management plan to minimise congestion while the project is carried out.

Significant traffic-light upgrades are included in the works, which will involve extensive channelling for electrical conduit, the reconfiguration of sidewalks and the installation of a new pedestrian crossing, the City said.

In an earlier announcement, motorists were advised that the Cavendish Car Park will remain operational throughout but commuters were advised to avoid the junction if possible.

The City added that it “appreciates the public’s patience as we work to improve our infrastructure”.
