Steven Bremar prevails in epic final
Steven Bremar overcame an epic see-saw battle against rival Matt Garrod to retain his Bermuda Open singles snooker title at Watford Sports Club.
The 62-year-old battled back from a 3-2 deficit during the final last Saturday to take the best-of-seven thriller 4-3 and maintain his grip on the coveted trophy.
“It’s always a good thing playing in a sport you like and to reap the rewards,” an elated Bremar told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s a good feeling and I am just so honoured.”
The experienced player trailed his rival three times before finding an extra gear to carry him safely across the line.
“I knew before I went in that it was going to be a thriller,” Bremar said. “Matt is a very good player, aggressive and knows the game, so I knew knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task.”
Bremar won the crucial sixth frame to level the score at 3-3 and set up the deciding seventh.
“Knowing that he needed one more game to win it, I needed to dig down a bit deeper to be able to come out on top, and ended up winning game six,” he said.
“So it went down to 3-3 and we shook hands and said may the best man win, and I came out on top.”
Asked did he ever have any doubts his title was slipping away, Bremar said: “I felt that if I didn’t pay attention through the whole period of each game he would have definitely got away because the guy is a really good player, by far one of the best players on the island.
“He had stopped playing for a little while as far as the league is concerned, but I still knew that he had it in him.”
Bremar is now bracing himself for another challenging contest when he and Zane DeSilva lock horns with Richard Burton and Gary Bascombe in the doubles final at Spanish Point Boat Club on May 9.
“That’s also going to be a hard task because both of them can play and know the game,” said Bremar, who is gunning for a treble after also winning the Memorial Cup at the same venue earlier this month.
“Mr Bascombe is no walk in the park and always has something up his sleeve.”
