Sean Trott rises from fall to secure third Legends Series title
Sean Trott narrowly avoided disaster on the way to clinching the Swan’s Running Club Legends Series title for a third time.
The 34-year-old suffered a fall midway through the Bermuda Healthcare Sir Stanley Burgess 5K but recovered to take second behind Lamont Marshall in 16min 41sec.
“Overall, I very happy with taking the win in the series,” Trott told The Royal Gazette. “I felt like I was able to be pretty consistent across all of the races, and my results obviously showed the work that I put in.
“Today I definitely would be happy overall with the time and the placing. I don't know if everybody knows, but I did take a bit of a fall at the turnaround point at Black Watch Pass, so I lost quite a bit of time just recovering from the fall and getting back up. Thankfully all is well, though; no injuries from that.
“In terms of how I was running before the fall, I would have been on pace for a good time. Still happy with the time that I had, though, and what I was able to show.
“Just being able to still take second and overall being able to still have the series title means a lot.”
Trott, who finished runner-up in the series last year, won three of the four races this year.
He was denied a sweep after Marshall led the field across the line in the series finale in 15:28 in his first appearance in this year’s series, with Adam Prunty taking third in 16:48.
Marshall was unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, Gayle Lindsay celebrated an impressive double after claiming top spot on the women’s podium and also retaining her series title.
The 35-year-old finished seventh overall, leading the women’s field across the line in a personal best 18:13, with Estienne Coetzee finishing runner-up in 18:40 and Megan Berry third in 20:14.
“I really enjoyed the race and delighted to run a new PB for the 5K,” Lindsay said.
“It’s a great way to close this year’s Legends Series.”
The Legends Series also consists of the Ed Sherlock 8K, the Ray Swan Flat 8K and the Ludwig Cann 10K.
To be eligible to win the series, runners have to compete in three of the four races, with double points awarded to all participants in the final race.
The winners of the overall series receive a Legends Race Series trophy and a cash prize of $1,000, with age-group winners also eligible for prizes.
