Submissions open for Museum Memories

The National Museum of Bermuda shares a memory of Jane Downing, registrar, when she was the museum curator in the 1990s

The National Museum of Bermuda is calling on people to share recollections of their experiences at the Dockyard site.

The community-crowdsourced Museum Memories project is part of the NMB’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

It is the latest effort by the organisation to change how history is shared and taught on the island, and add new voices to historic record.

The NMB said that it aimed to “collect and share community memories of the historic Keep Fort through the ages: from being part of a working dockyard to a derelict site, to becoming the Bermuda Maritime Museum, and to today as the National Museum of Bermuda”.

Submissions of memories can be made with or without photographs.

Elena Strong, the museum’s executive director, said: “NMB is home to Bermuda’s cultural past and our collective future, remaining strong thanks to a 50-year history of committed partners, generous donors and determined resolve.

“Thanks to a recent campaign, we are entering a new era, building on strong foundations to shift how history is shared and taught in Bermuda.

“We continue to stay true to our mission: protecting, interpreting and sharing Bermuda’s history and heritage through our collections, exhibits, publications and programmes, and growing as a vital educational and cultural institution for everyone in Bermuda.”

Katie Bennett, the NMB advancement director, asked: “What’s your history with the museum? Were you a volunteer, an intern, a visitor, a staff member? Did you visit with family and friends? We want to capture your memories and see your photos.”

Submissions can be made and viewed at nmb.bm/memories and the project will be open until the end of the year.
