Government warns about fake promise of online classes
The Ministry of Education has warned the public to be wary of a fake social-media notice promising free online classes.
A spokeswoman for the ministry said: “We've received reports of individuals attempting to use this link. We want to ensure that no one else falls for this deceptive advert.
“The Ministry of Education does not offer online classes.”
The false notice claimed that the Ministry of Education offered free online classes and encouraged individuals to apply through included links.
It states: “Ministry of Education of Bermuda offers free online university courses to everyone aged 18 and over.
“You can attend the course at any time of your choosing. You will receive a diploma upon completion.”
The spokeswoman said that those who are interested in furthering their education should visit the Bermuda College website, www.college.bm.
She added: “Discover various degree and continuing education courses designed to help you succeed.
“In 2017 the newly elected government fulfilled its pledge to provide financial support to ensure all Bermudians, regardless of financial status, have access to programmes at the Bermuda College.”
The scam is one of several to arise recently, with the Bermuda Monetary Authority warning licensees about a phishing scheme last week.
