Olympic hopeful Jah-Nhai Perinchief was in action at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational Meet at the weekend.

The 26-year-old held his own among a formidable field on the way to a fourth-place finish in the men’s triple jump with a best effort of 16.51 achieved on his final jump at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, on Saturday.

Perinchief is bidding to become the first Bermudian to compete in the men’s triple jump at the Olympics since Brian Wellman in Atlanta in 1996, a feat Bermuda National Athletics Association president Freddie Evans believes is well within the athlete’s reach.

“Jah-Nhai is well in pursuit of his Olympic goals,” Evans told The Royal Gazette.

“He didn’t reach the standard last weekend but continues to progress and continues to be highly competitive.

“His primary goal is to hit the standard (17.22) and not depend on the newly formatted points system, and we believe that the standard is well within his reach.”

Perinchief impressed on the way to claiming the silver medal at last month’s USATF Bermuda Grand Prix at Flora Duffy Stadium, producing a wind-assisted 17.13 with his fourth jump in his first major meet since the World Championships in Budapest last August.

Jamaicans swept the men’s triple jump places at last weekend’s event, with Jaydon Hibbert taking gold with a leap of 17.57, Jordan Scott (16.84) silver and O’Brien Wasome (16.62) bronze.

It was the second straight victory for Hibbert, who has already qualified for the Paris Olympics, after he claimed top spot with a best jump of 17.33 at last month’s USATF Bermuda Grand Prix.

The rising Jamaican star’s winning distance is the second-best of this year’s outdoor season to date behind two-times Diamond League champion Andy Diaz Hernandez, who achieved 17.61 competing in Poland in February.
