Khaldun-Diarra joins Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Bermudian-raised Zuhirah Khaldun-Diarra has been named vice-president, Philanthropy Marketing at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, one of the world's leading centres for cancer research and treatment.
The daughter of Michelle Khaldun, a longtime civil servant, Ms Khaldun-Diarra was described as a native New Yorker who graduated from Warwick Academy in Bermuda.
Her mother was the general manager of Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation before joining the C-suite of the Bermuda government as education permanent secretary, and later as permanent secretary for the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism.
Ms Khaldun-Diarra has roots in the music industry, having worked for a living legend and for different music labels early in her career.
In her new role, she will develop the strategic direction and oversee the execution of all branding, marketing, advertising, media relations, digital marketing, web, publications and social media for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund’s $400 million-plus annual fundraising programme, supporting its mission to reduce the burden of cancer through groundbreaking research and care.
She has had more than 20 years of expertise and leadership in philanthropic branding, marketing, strategic communications, and advocacy having led award-winning campaigns and initiatives at national and international non-profit including Unicef USA, the National Urban League, and Jump-start for Young Children, where she most recently served as vice-president of marketing, communications, and brand at the Boston-based national early education and care organisation.
Her appointment was the result of a “comprehensive nationwide search”.
Jeff Jablow, deputy chief philanthropy officer welcomed her, pointing out: “Her unique skill set spanning brand marketing, communications and advocacy, combined with a tireless and lifelong commitment to helping others through her work in non-profit organisations, positions her well to further our mission to pursue the best in cancer research and care.”
Ms Khaldun-Diarra commented: “I am excited and honoured to work with Dana-Farber’s incredible philanthropy team, faculty, and stakeholders to continue creating an impact and offering hope for patients and families affected by cancer in New England and across the globe.”
Ms Khaldun-Diarra began her career in the music industry (Geffen Records, Island Def Jam Music Group) as publicist for Jay-Z and the Roots, among others, after which she transitioned to work in brand marketing at Converse.
She has served on numerous boards including Oceans First Institute and resides with her family in Hudson, New York.
