A meeting between the Bermuda Cricket Board and the island’s cricket teams to discuss the format of the 50 overs leagues has been scheduled for Tuesday night.

At issue is the decision to reduce the league to one round of matches against the wishes of many of the affiliated clubs, who believe the move limits players’ exposure to the longer version of the game and hinders the development of young talent.

St George’s coach Clay Smith has been a loud voice among the clubs lobbying for the addition of a second round of matches at the expense of T20 competition and after his team beat Western Stars in the Premier Division on Sunday, Smith reiterated that the decision needed a rethink.

“You might think that, in this position, we would be satisfied with one round because our position would make it easier to win the league,” said Smith.

“But no, we want two rounds of 50 overs, because that’s what cricket needs in Bermuda and even though we’re in this position we still want two rounds of cricket.”

It has been reported that the reason for shortening the 50 overs competition was to prevent the season from running into the month of October and infringing on the start of the football season, with many of the grounds used for both sports.
